During my summers in college, I took a job at a local business office. The money sucked and I dreaded going to work everyday. I can’t explain how excruciatingly painful it was to sit there every day keeping one eye on my blank computer screen and the other on the clock. After my first few 9 hour days, I was on the verge of checking myself in at the local mental hospital.

I was about to give up my dream of wealth and luxury when one of my friends introduced me to this new auction website called eBay. I had seen the commercials but never thought anything of it. He told me how he made $200 in two days just by selling used textbooks. It got me thinking, and I started looking into how I could do something similar.

The next step I took changed my life: I created my first eBay account.

Within hours, I was scrambling to find anything I could to sell on eBay. I sold everything from old calculators to belts and worn-out shoes to beat up hats. I asked all my neighbors in the dorm for the junk in their old textbooks. You name it, I sold it. It was great. I had about $2,500 in sales in my first month and I had barely scratched the surface!

SO HOW DID I DO IT?

I would start really small by selling baseball hats and refrigerator magnets (no joke!). I was able to make a small profit on each item. Then, I would leverage those dollars to buy even bigger products and make even bigger profits!

My favorite part about eBay was (and is) that as soon as you sell something, you get paid within hours. The money is deposited right into your PayPal account and available for you to transfer to your bank account for immediate withdrawal (Don’t worry, I will show you how to set this up). Making money doesn’t get any easier than that! At my office job, I had to wait two weeks to see any money. I hated it. I had to budget my life so I didn’t go bankrupt over a tank of gas! But not with eBay.

Then college started coming in handy. One day in my marketing class, I heard a very interesting comment by my professor. He said the best things a start-up business can do is develop a target market. That way you become a specialist in that area, thus differentiating yourself from the competition. Brilliant! Thank goodness I went to class that day.

I scoured the internet to research all that I could on target marketing (too lazy to go to class) and I wanted to figure out the best product to sell. Don’t worry, I did all this work for you!

It turned out that my best opportunity was to buy and sell sports jerseys. I found a wholesaler online, ordered 50 jerseys, and patiently waited for them to arrive. I was like a kid on Christmas morning when that box came.

I then systematically listed each item on my account – it took about 30 minutes. One by one, they sold faster than pancakes at IHOP. When one jersey sold, I immediately listed another.
